Have you ever heard the statement, “He is the spitting image of his father”? That statement has been made about me on more than one occasion. I have honestly become my father. I walk like he does and talk like he does and, more and more every day, I have found that I look exactly like he does. The reality is that I become like my daddy when we hang out and I mimic him on a regular basis. I followed his every move when I was growing up and did everything I saw him doing. Then, as a rebellious teenager, I decided I wanted to look nothing like him. In my early twenties, reality set in and I prayed I would become half the man he was.

It is awesome to want to imitate your earthly father but Paul tells us that as followers of Christ we need to imitate another father. Ephesians 5:1 says, “Therefore be imitators of God, as dearly loved children.” So, consider this question again, but this time about your heavenly father... “Do you look like your Daddy?” Can you honestly say that the life you are currently living is characterized by these things that Paul reminds us of in this passage?

  • Love- We are God’s children if we have asked Him to be the leader and forgiver of our lives. His love should flow out of our lives. Our love should make us willing to sacrifice and to serve the way Jesus did. Paul also points out that our lifestyle and our language is changed through the love that develops from this imitating behavior.
  • Light- We are no longer in darkness once we have received Christ. We are called to shine His light in the world where we live. Paul tells us that the darkness needs to be affected by the light so we need to be in this world and not of it. We need to go into the darkness and shine His light so that the darkness is scattered. People that simply love Jesus and live every moment for Him bring Light and Life to a lost and dying world.
  • Led by the Spirit- The key to looking like our Daddy is Allowing the Spirit of God to fill our minds and hearts. In verse 18 Paul talks about being filled with the Spirit. This means that, as we surrender our will to the influence of the Spirit, we begin to look like Him. This is a continual process in the life of a believer, not a onetime event. We must continually give control of our lives to the Spirit of God, so that we can live a life of love and light in a world that desperately needs to experience it.

If we were to be honest with ourselves today, would we say we look more like the world or would we say we look more like our Daddy? We don’t need more Christians that look like the world! We need more Christians that look like Daddy!

Spend some time in prayer today asking God to fill you with His Spirit so that you can look more like Him today.
